Build Yourself a Hybrid

I would first like to say that I have NEVER attempted anything like this before.  What you read in this section is exactly what I am doing, it may be wrong, it may be right.  It is just intended to show how an amateur can build (I hope so….) a road legal RR/Series Hybrid.  I have only basic tools and basic knowledge and I’m certainly no mechanic!!  This is a write up of my procedures, cock ups, disasters and hopefully a few success’s!  I hope you enjoy it.

Why I choose a Hybrid when my Series 3 was running great.

Cutting and Preparing the Rangerover Chassis

Measuring and Welding the Chassis

Cutting and re-welding the Chassis (BIG MISTAKE!!!!!)

Welding the External Plates

Rolling chassis

Dismantling the Series 3

Problems with engine and gear box

Bodywork alignment

Shortening the rear tub

Attaching a 90 rear X-member

Fitting Defender spats to a Series tub

Fitting the roll cage

RR brakes onto a 90 bulkhead

At this stage all the body work was removed as nearly all the welding was done.  The outriggers were properly welded (as they were only tacked) and the chassis ready for paint.

Painting the chassis

Fitting the fuel tank

Costs as the Project Stands

Spraying the Hybrid

90 Truckcab

For you on the mailing list and new visitors, I would really appreciate some feed back.  Is it coming across right? Would you like to see more detail? Does it even make sense?

I actually have over 200 pictures now, far too many for the web site.  They are better quality but too big for my site! I am intending to put the whole lot with a full explanation onto a CD if people are interested.  There is likely to be 750+ pictures!!  It was probably cost £5 (just to cover the costs etc) and I can either post you a copy or pick one up at the LROi show, if people are interested that is.  Let me know what you think.
